Creating a Cozy Gathering for Your Next Book Club
Share
There’s nothing better than a gathering of book-loving friends! Here are my favorite tips and essentials for a cozy, memorable book club gathering that everyone will look forward to month after month :)
- Pick the Right Book (or let the group decide!)
Choosing the right book can really set the tone. I love picking something that’s engaging and ideally that I haven’t read before. Books that spark lots of conversation—whether it’s a popular romance, a cozy mystery, or a deep character-driven novel—are always a hit.
If you’ve hit a wall, try browsing online lists like “Must-Read Romances” or “Best Fantasy Books of 2024” for ideas. You could also take turns letting each member suggest a book. This way, everyone gets a chance to introduce the group to something new, and you’re bound to discover some hidden gems.
- Have a Few Questions Ready
One of the things I love most about book clubs is that everyone brings their own perspective. But sometimes, it helps to have a few discussion questions prepared—especially if there’s a lull in conversation. Think about questions that dive into the heart of the book, like questioning the main character’s motives, what could have made the ending more satisfying, or where you felt the story took a turn for the better (or worse!). One of my favorite fun questions to ask is “what character would you like to meet most in real life, and why?”.
Coming up with questions doesn’t need to be formal or feel like homework! Just keep it natural and use the questions as a springboard to get everyone talking. Sometimes these little prompts lead to the most insightful, funny, or even heartwarming moments.
- Set the Ambiance
Book clubs are meant to be relaxing, so creating a warm atmosphere goes a long way. Arrange your seating so everyone can see each other and feel included, whether you’re on the couch, at a table, or spread out on floor pillows. Lighting can make a big difference too—think candles or string lights to add a cozy vibe!
If you’re a fan of bookish decor, this is a great excuse to break out any book-inspired candles you have. MalMadeThis candles can really add that extra touch, making the whole room feel bookish ;)
- Have Some Snacks, Treats, and Drinks on Hand
Snacks make everything better! Keep it simple with some easy finger foods—think charcuterie boards, fruit, chocolates, or chips and dips. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even theme your snacks around the book’s setting (or a food/meal featured in the book you’re reading!).
As for drinks, a mix of coffee, tea, and maybe a little wine tends to cover everyone’s preferences. If you’re in the mood, a seasonal drink can be fun too—like spiced cider for cozy autumn reads. A book-themed drink can also be great, and looking up “book-inspired cocktails” can lead you down a fun and adventurous rabbit hole. Just remember to relax and enjoy the process; it’s all about making the night feel special.
- Little Extras to Make It Memorable (ie- take home gifts)
Adding small, personal touches can make the night feel extra special. A cute seasonal bookmark, a little notepad and pen for jotting down quotes/annotating, or a bookish keychain makes a lovely take-home treat. Plus, it gives everyone a fun reminder of the night—and of course, a reason to look forward to the next gathering!
Happy Hosting!
Every book club is unique, and that’s what makes it so fun. So, next time your book club gathers, lean into the cozy vibes, enjoy the conversation, and remember—it’s the shared love of reading that makes each gathering unforgettable. Happy reading, and happy hosting!
